Louisville Gas and Electric (LG&E) provides electric service in Louisville and 16 surrounding counties. LG&E and Kentucky Utilities share one net metering program and application process.

Customers who began net metering since late September 2021 are on Rider NMS 2, which gives a dollar denominated bill credit at the NMS 2 rate for all electricity sent to the grid, while electricity drawn from LG&E is billed under the customer's regular rate. Credits offset energy charges only, excess credit carries to the next bill, and credits are never paid in cash. Customers who started earlier stay on Rider NMS 1, which uses kilowatt hour credits.

Ground mounted systems need an electrical permit, and roof mounted systems need an electrical permit and a simplified building permit, both from Develop Louisville, Division of Construction Review. Electrical and building inspections are required after installation, and homes in preservation districts may also need a Certificate of Appropriateness.

The federal residential clean energy credit, section 25D, ended for home solar expenditures made after December 31, 2025, under the law signed July 4, 2025. The IRS treats the expenditure as made when installation is completed, so a system completed in 2026 does not qualify even if it was paid for earlier.
