Most homes in the City of Atlanta get their electricity from Georgia Power, an investor owned utility regulated by the Georgia Public Service Commission. Georgia Power's original monthly netting pilot is closed to new customers, so new rooftop solar owners can apply for its RNR Instantaneous Netting program, which credits power sent to the grid at a solar avoided cost rate that Georgia Power updates each year plus a fixed adder. Before connecting, you or your installer apply through Georgia Power's PowerClerk portal and sign an interconnection agreement, and the system must pass inspection by the local building authority, which for City of Atlanta addresses is the Office of Buildings.

Can I still get net metering from Georgia Power in Atlanta?
Georgia Power's original monthly netting pilot was limited to 5,000 customers and is not open to new participants. New solar customers can enroll in RNR Instantaneous Netting, which credits power sent to the grid at an annual solar avoided cost rate plus a fixed adder per kWh, with the credits added up each month to reduce the bill. Residential systems must be 10 kW AC or smaller, and Georgia Power says the program is currently open on a first come, first served basis.
What do I need to file with Georgia Power before turning on solar panels in Atlanta?
You or your installer submit an interconnection application in Georgia Power's PowerClerk portal with an electrical diagram, a site plan, and equipment specification sheets, and Georgia Power advises waiting for its review before buying equipment. You then sign a service and interconnection agreement, the finished system must pass a local inspection, and Georgia Power grants permission to operate after any required witness test.
Who issues solar and electrical permits in the City of Atlanta?
The City of Atlanta Office of Buildings, part of the Department of City Planning at City Hall on Trinity Avenue SW, issues building permits and trade permits such as electrical permits. Georgia Power requires every home solar system to be inspected by the local building authority after installation and before it connects to the grid.
Is there still a federal tax credit for home solar?
The federal residential clean energy credit, section 25D, ended for home solar expenditures made after December 31, 2025, under the law signed July 4, 2025. The IRS treats the expenditure as made when installation is completed, so a system completed in 2026 does not qualify even if it was paid for earlier.
