Georgia Power, an investor owned utility fully regulated by the Georgia Public Service Commission, serves approximately 2.7 million customers in 155 of Georgia's 159 counties.

How Georgia Power credits exports

Georgia Power credits home solar through its Renewable and Nonrenewable Resources tariff, Schedule RNR 11, which has applied since bills rendered in January 2023 and whose charges and payments are subject to approval by the Georgia Public Service Commission.
New residential customers can join RNR Instantaneous Netting, where excess energy is the electricity a home sends to the grid at any moment beyond what Georgia Power is supplying to the home at that same moment.
All excess energy earns two credits, a Renewable Generation Credit based on Georgia Power's solar avoided energy cost, which is updated every year, and a Renewable Generation Adder at a fixed rate the Commission approved in Georgia Power's 2022 rate case, and both are summed each month and used to reduce the total monthly bill.
The older RNR Monthly Netting option, which first uses a month's excess energy to reduce that month's usage, is limited to customers already in its existing 5,000 customer pilot and is not available to anyone else.
Monthly Netting lasts no longer than 15 years and expires no later than December 31, 2038, after which those customers are moved automatically to Instantaneous Netting.
A customer who installs a system without choosing a program is enrolled in Energy Offset Only, which pays nothing for energy sent to the grid.

Limits and eligibility

Residential systems qualify for the RNR tariff only with a peak generating capacity of 10 kW AC or less, measured by the combined nameplate capacity of the inverters at the service point.
RNR Instantaneous Netting is available on a first come, first served basis until the combined capacity of all renewable sources reaches 0.2 percent of Georgia Power's annual peak demand in the previous year, and Georgia Power says the program is currently open.
A home whose battery system has been derated and still has a maximum inverter capability greater than 10 kW cannot take part in the RNR program.
RNR Monthly Netting cannot be moved from one home to another, and it is not available to customers on FlatBill, Pre Pay, Community Solar or Real Time Pricing service.

How a home gets connected

The homeowner or installer submits an interconnection application in Georgia Power's PowerClerk online tool with a one line electrical diagram, a site plan and equipment specification sheets.
Georgia Power reviews the application and advises customers not to buy equipment until that review shows how the system can connect to existing Georgia Power equipment and service.
The customer signs a service and interconnection agreement for the chosen program, which Georgia Power sends through PowerClerk for electronic signature, and a written RNR agreement is required before the system connects or earns credits.
After installation, every solar and battery system must pass inspection by the local authority having jurisdiction before it connects to the grid.
Georgia Power may require a witness test, and after the system passes it programs the meter for bidirectional service where applicable, which marks permission to operate, and emails a Permission to Operate letter to the customer and the installer.

Common questions about Georgia Power and solar

Does Georgia Power still offer monthly net metering to new solar customers?

No. RNR Monthly Netting is available only to customers already participating in the existing 5,000 customer pilot and is not open to additional customers. New customers can apply for RNR Instantaneous Netting, which Georgia Power says is currently open for participation.

How big can a home solar system be to get export credits from Georgia Power?

Under the RNR tariff, a residential system must have a peak generating capacity of 10 kW AC or less, based on the combined nameplate capacity of its inverters. A home with a battery whose derated inverter capability is still above 10 kW cannot join the RNR program.

What happens if I install solar but do not sign up for a Georgia Power solar program?

Georgia Power automatically enrolls a customer with an installed system in Energy Offset Only if the customer has not chosen a program. Energy Offset Only customers are not compensated for any excess energy delivered to the grid, and Georgia Power may require equipment that prevents export.

Is there still a federal tax credit for home solar?

The federal residential clean energy credit, section 25D, ended for home solar expenditures made after December 31, 2025, under the law signed July 4, 2025. The IRS treats the expenditure as made when installation is completed, so a system completed in 2026 does not qualify even if it was paid for earlier.
