Georgia Power serves homes and businesses in the Savannah area. In June 2026 it said its Big Ogeechee substation in west Chatham County, built for load growth across Chatham, Bryan and Effingham counties, would increase power delivery capacity for both existing and future customers.
New customers can join RNR Instantaneous Netting under Schedule RNR 11, where energy sent to the grid beyond what the home is using at that moment earns the solar avoided energy cost, updated every year, plus an adder the Georgia Public Service Commission approved in the 2022 rate case, and the credits are summed monthly to reduce the bill. Residential systems must be 10 kW AC or smaller, and Georgia Power says the program is currently open on a first come, first served basis until renewable capacity reaches 0.2 percent of its prior year peak demand. RNR Monthly Netting is limited to customers already in its existing 5,000 customer pilot and is not open to anyone else.
The City of Savannah's Development Services office takes solar permit applications, for rooftop or ground mounted systems, through the eTRAC online portal. Its solar permit checklist requires an approved Certificate of Appropriateness for a home in a designated historic district, with questions sent to the MPC, and a floodplain worksheet for projects in a special flood hazard zone. Georgia Power's PowerClerk application also asks for a local inspection report where one applies.
The federal residential clean energy credit, section 25D, ended for home solar expenditures made after December 31, 2025, under the law signed July 4, 2025. The IRS treats the expenditure as made when installation is completed, so a system completed in 2026 does not qualify even if it was paid for earlier.
