Most homes in Wichita get electricity from Evergy Kansas Central, an investor owned utility, although the city has also granted electric franchises to cooperatives such as Butler Rural Electric Cooperative, so some addresses may be served by a cooperative instead. Evergy Kansas Central offers net metering under its Net Metering Rider, which nets the power your home uses against the power your panels send to the grid each billing period and credits any extra at Evergy's monthly system average cost of energy, which Evergy describes as a wholesale rate. Evergy requires an approved interconnection application before a system is turned on, and solar permits for the City of Wichita are handled by the Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department.

Does Evergy offer net metering in Wichita?
Yes. Kansas law requires investor owned utilities such as Evergy to offer net metering to customers in good standing on a first come, first served basis, and Evergy Kansas Central provides it through its Net Metering Rider. If your home is served by an electric cooperative instead, the state net metering requirement does not apply, so check with that cooperative.
How does Evergy credit extra solar power in Wichita?
Each billing period, Evergy offsets the power your system sends to the grid against the power you use, one for one. If you send more than you use, the extra kilowatt hours are credited at Evergy's monthly system average cost of energy, which Evergy describes as a wholesale rate. Evergy says leftover credit carries forward but expires after 12 months and is not paid out.
Do I need a permit to install solar panels in Wichita?
Solar permits for the City of Wichita go through the Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department, which requires solar photovoltaic systems to be installed by an MABCD licensed electrical contractor. Evergy also requires a passed city or county inspection before it installs the net meter.
Is there still a federal tax credit for home solar?
The federal residential clean energy credit, section 25D, ended for home solar expenditures made after December 31, 2025, under the law signed July 4, 2025. The IRS treats the expenditure as made when installation is completed, so a system completed in 2026 does not qualify even if it was paid for earlier.
