Solar in Grand Rapids: your utility and the rules
Most homes in Grand Rapids get their electricity from Consumers Energy Company, an investor owned utility regulated by the Michigan Public Service Commission. Under the Consumers Energy Distributed Generation Program, you pay your retail rate for power you draw from the grid, called inflow, and you receive a bill credit based on the power supply rate for extra solar power your system sends back, called outflow, with any unused credit carried forward to later bills. Before your system can operate, an interconnection application is completed with Consumers Energy, and residential electrical permits in the city are issued by the City of Grand Rapids Development Center.

Does Consumers Energy still offer net metering in Grand Rapids?
Consumers Energy replaced net metering with its Distributed Generation Program, which took effect January 1, 2021. New solar customers are billed for inflow and credited for outflow under that program.
How does Consumers Energy credit extra solar power sent to the grid?
Outflow is credited based on the power supply rates of your rate schedule, which include transmission costs, plus the Power Supply Cost Recovery factor. Consumers says that since February 27, 2024 the credit applies to all electric charges on the bill rather than only the power supply portion, though its tariff excludes securitization charges, and unused credit carries forward.
What do I need before connecting solar to the grid in Grand Rapids?
You or your installer complete Consumers Energy's interconnection application through its PowerClerk portal, perform a commissioning test, and sign the Generator Interconnection Operating Agreement. Residential electrical permits in the city go through the City of Grand Rapids Development Center.
Is there still a federal tax credit for home solar?
The federal residential clean energy credit, section 25D, ended for home solar expenditures made after December 31, 2025, under the law signed July 4, 2025. The IRS treats the expenditure as made when installation is completed, so a system completed in 2026 does not qualify even if it was paid for earlier.
